SeaMe project wins environmental award at the IMCA Awards 2025

RWE has been awarded “Environmental Sustainability Project of the Year” at the 2025 IMCA Awards for its innovative SeaMe project. The IMCA Awards recognise excellence and innovation across the offshore and marine sector. The SeaMe project particularly impressed the independent jury of industry experts with its use of drones, underwater robotics, eDNA sampling, 24/7 operating cameras (for both birds and underwater life) and AI-based video analysis – enabling the protection of marine life and reduction of emissions through continuous, non-intrusive monitoring.
Anemo Robotics advances in SeaMe test campaigns

The Anemo Robotics team has been conducting multiple test campaigns for the SeaMe project. In central Denmark, a long-term trial of an anti-biofouling solution was completed in a harsh marine growth environment to ensure reliable underwater monitoring. At the Alfred Wegener Institute in Helgoland, deployment trials with a connector box and three cameras verified system features such as virtual machine connectivity and Cosyna network integration. Testing of a stereo camera setup has also been initiated to estimate fish size and biomass, providing insights into marine fauna near ocean structures.
DeepLeng AUV gears up for SeaMe project field tests

The team is preparing the AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle). DeepLeng for its first field tests in the SeaMe project. The underwater robot has been extensively modified with additional hardware and software for sea deployment and tested in the DFKI water tank and inland waters. An initial AI algorithm for fish detection has also been trained. The AUV is being developed at the DFKI’s Robotics Innovation Center.
AI bird wind farm tracker proves effective

The work package on bird monitoring achieved a milestone in May 2025 with the installation of AI-powered bird detection cameras on two turbines. The cameras will monitor the birds 24/7 in the rotor area, providing data that will be used to let the system ‘learn’ and to trial the upcoming AI-based evaluations. This work package is being delivered in collaboration with Spoor.
Innovative Offshore eDNA Sampling for Biodiversity Monitoring

The team carrying out water sampling for eDNA analysis has started to carry out regular offshore trips and first pilot analyses are already available. EDNA makes it possible to monitor the biodiversity of the benthos (the animals and plants living on and in the seabed) and plankton, and be less invasive than current grab sampling. The work package is implemented together with the Alfred-Wegener-Institut (AWI) and the Helmholtz Institut für Funktionelle Marine Biodiversität (HIfMB).
BioConsult SH invests in long-range UAVs for ecological research and monitoring

The first test flights of the Primico One 150 drone, which will be used for the aerial surveys during SeaMe, have been successful. The drone is equipped with a camera rig, and the training of the AI that will analyse videos and pictures has been initiated. Using drones rather than planes and ships will reduce the GHG emissions generated to perform this kind of monitoring. This module is carried out by the Bioconsult SH team.
